My group wanted to test their tackle, strength, and angling skills today.

These guys fish a lot, and brought their own stand of jigging tackle, and high hopes of wrestling a few of the abundant bluefin tunas that have been present off Hatteras for weeks now. We had a lot of bites, and most of them got away, but we did manage to land four. Their sizes ranged from the one pictured, which was 58" and 135 pounds, to one that was over 70", and in the 200-225 pound range. They were a handful on that gear. The other boats in the area that were trolling had all the action they wanted as well.

We didn't go out today, but I get get some better information from one of my dock partners who fished up to the east yesterday.

First of all, there were MILES of bluefins. Boats caught what they wanted, and had to pick up and run to get out of them.....only to set back out and get hit by them again! The other interesting thing was that everybody who fished below the bluefin fleet, and out a little deeper, had several yellowfin bites. I think the sea conditions were a little on the challenging side, but I was told that if it had been a little calmer, it would have been reasonable to expect a pretty good catch of yellowins in the 30 - 35 pound range. I'm ready!

Most of the boats headed up to the east to catch bluefins, but we headed down the beach in search of yellowfins.

They said that the bluefin fishing was pretty much a "no brainer", but since you can only keep one, my group was fine with rolling the dice, and looking elsewhere for something different. We never had a yellowfin bite, but the amberjacks were plenty thick, so we let everybody catch a couple on the verticle jigs before continuing our search. We caught a couple of king mackerels as well, before we headed out in the deep. I had hoped to run across a random school of yellowfins out there, and we did find some birds in one area, but no bites. Before throwing in the towel, we made a couple of deep drops and snagged a couple of groupers and a couple of tilefish.

I have had more inquiries this year about make-up charters than ever.

Times being the way they are have left many of my faithful customers "shorthanded", and they have struggled to get a full group together for a charter. At the same time, many of them would prefer to fish with me, and not with someone who's operation they aren't familiar with. I just filled a charter for April 4th, and it occured to me that I should be adding to my list of make-up requests. Here's the deal. If you want to go fishing but can't quite pull a group together, email me with you contact information, and when you would be available to go. I even have a list of people who are just "on call". Giving me your name and number doesn't obligate you in any way, however, I will be working to try to put together a trip that includes you. At the same time, bear in mind that getting on a make-up list for a certain week doesn't guarantee you a date. If you have enough people to book a day, I would recommend doing so. Today would have been my first charter of the spring, but it is quite windy, and my group is in town for a couple more days. We are gonna try it on Sunday.

From time to time, people tell me that they want to come down when the bluefins are "running". COME NOW!!

For the last few weeks, the bluefins have been making a pretty good showing, and only getting better. The fish seem to be in the 100-200 pound class. The problem is that bookings are slow, but I'm putting the word out that you need to try and get here. Call or email soon to make your reservation!

I took Andrea out this afternoon to rake up another bushel of scallops, so Simon doesn't have one up on her.

Yesterday one boat did fish offshore, and the report was that he got struck by the 100 pound bluefins one time, and also caught a yellowfin, one wahoo, and some amberjacks. The weather is breaking and it's time to get out there!
