Better Late Than Never

Posted By Captain Dave in fishing | Permalink | Comments
Part of my group missed the boat today, due to navigational errors (in the car not the boat). We wound up leaving the dock an hour late but still put together a nice catch of fish!

The ocean was crowded with boats today, so finding a spot to yourself was tough. We managed to come up with a nice catch of dolphin this morning, but it was pretty slow after that. Near the end of the day I was able to hit a bottom spot that was inside of the hard current for a couple of drops. We landed a grouper and a handful of rosefish. Thanks a bunch Reggie!

Killed 'Em Early!

Posted By Captain Dave in fishing | Permalink | Comments
The wind was forecasted to breeze out of the southwest early in the day. Once it started blowing, it was the real deal. Fortunately I stopped on a spot that was loaded with gaffers and big bailers. We filled up the box and wrapped it up early!

Today was the first day of the Hatteras Village Marlin Tournament, and it sounded like there were a few marlin bites too. Thanks for another great one Howard. I'll see you guys again in the morning!

We had a brisk northerly wind today and I was one layer shy of being warm all day!

The wind had the grass streaked out and the fishing wasn't as good as it has been, but we still scrapped out a nice catch of dolphin, mostly gaffers. There were a few marlin seen and a couple of wahoos caught as well as a couple of yellowfins. Thanks for another fun day Greg, I'll see you next spring!

Today my new friends invited Simon to join them, so it was a extra great trip for me!

We had some pretty great dolphin fishing again today, a lot of gaffers and nice bailers. Everybody caught their share, and some got plenty of rest! Thanks for a fun day offshore Shirley, can't wait to see you guys again!

Sister's Competition

Today Walter brought his three girls down for a great day offshore.

We found a couple of batches of dolphin, the last school had some big gaffers in it and everybody caught a couple. By the time the smoke cleared we had put together a great catch! Also we had a wahoo get away about a foot from the gaff...bummer. Thanks Walter, I'll see you guys next time!

Another Big Day!

Posted By Captain Dave in fishing | Permalink | Comments
This morning I counted 27 boats leaving Hatteras Inlet at the same time, and immediately felt anxiety. I decided to head south, avoid the crowd and take what I could get.

We had an occasional dolphin bite through the early morning, landed some and lost a bunch. At first it seemed like it was gonna be one of those days where we were plagued with rubber hooks. I struck gold further out in the deep and found a "mega school" of gaffers and big bailers. It was a healing. After that we skipped baits for a marlin for a while, then we shallowed up for a wahoo but had no luck with either. Thanks Jud, it was a great day and I can't wait to do it again!

May Gaffers

Posted By Captain Dave in fishing | Permalink | Comments
We all knew it was gonna happen...it is May you know.

I didn't have a trip yesterday but today was a continuation of the great dolphin fishing that has been building up for a week or so. I'd say it peaked today because it can't get any better! Hopefully the fishing will stay good for a while. Thanks Steve!

We were all pleasantly surprised by the beautiful day. It was a little "swelly" left over from the low pressure that has been creating rough conditions lately, but there was very little wind and the fishing was pretty good.

My friends Ken and Todd did a great job each time we had a dolphin flurry, and we managed to put together a nice catch of mostly gaffers. We also landed two wahoos. There were a few yellowfins and blackfins around the fleet but we were tunaless today. I made friends with a bird who spent a few hours on the bridge with me. I was able to snap a photo of him while he was perched on my finger! Thanks for another great trip guys!

LT and the guys drove down from northern Va. in hopes of snagging some big bottom fish.

The current was running about 2 ½ knots so bottom dropping would have been tough, especially against a 20 knot northeaster. I thought our efforts would have been better spent trolling, and we did wind up with a pretty nice catch of dolphin. We also fell a couple of feet short of landing a nice wahoo that got lucky and escaped just out of Justin's gaff reach. Some of the guys had some blackfin action, and there were a few other wahoo encounters as well as a couple of yellowfins caught today. Thanks again LT. Can't wait to fish with you guys again!

Better Sign Of Dolphin

Posted By Captain Dave in fishing | Permalink | Comments
After a long break, it was good to get back offshore today. It was slick calm, and that's always a treat!

Fishing wasn't red hot but everybody caught a handful of fish today. There were a few yellowfin bites, a few blackfins and a wahoo or two caught. Our action was dolphin, but we wound up landing ten which should be enough to feed the 24 mouths that are back at the cottage and eagerly awaiting a fresh fish dinner! Thanks for a great day offshore Brent, and I hope we get to do it again soon!
