Outer Banks Fishing Report

May
22
Today it was all about location. The fishing was great if you were in the right spot, but you could easily be in the wrong spot too.

The one grass line that attracted all the attention was covered up with boats pretty early, so I trolled off in the deep, in hopes of finding something great, but at nearly 500 fathoms and no bites, I turned around, tucked my tail, and began trolling back towards the shallows. It sounded like there were some good catches of dolphin up the line, and down below, but we were in the middle, and things were a little slow. I decided to hit one of my Amberjack spots with the jigs, and it was a good choice. We caught our limit of AJs, and just before finishing up, a STUD barracuda came in and ate half of an amberjack. Justin put the other half on a live bait rig, on a TLD 25, and hooked him up. We got him in the boat and released him unharmed, but man what a cuda! After that we actually had some dolphin bites, mostly small to medium gaffers, and wound up with a handful of them, along with a few king mackerels. Right at the end, I saw a leatherback turtle with a pod of cobias swimming with him. Justin casted a rig to them hooked one, and while we were landing him, I lost track of the turtle. Oh well, glad to have the one for a bonus anyway! There were a few wahoos caught, a scattered tuna, a couple of sails, and a few blue marlin seen, but none caught. The weather was perfect.
