28 Today I had the privilege of spending the day with my uncle and three of my cousins.
We didn't have much luck finding dolphin today, but we had a number of bigger bites that produced some quality fish for us. We did catch a handful of bailers first thing this morning, but it was so scrappy that I decided to head offshore to look around. My cousin Skyler started things off with a citation 43 pound wahoo. After riding out to 400 fathoms and back in we hooked a nice 25 pound gaffer dolphin and somehow Skyler wound up with the rod again. Our next bit of action came in the form of a doubleheader sailfish. We hooked one of them and Cara fought him to the leader for the release. Nice job Cara. Next was a single sailfish bite which was given to Skyler to battle. He did a great job but somehow in the midst of all the jumping, the fish got wrapped up in the leader and broke off. Still an exciting fight. Thanks again uncle Gene for a great day together! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul
27 Today was a picture perfect day for Hatteras fishing. We had a cool, light northeast wind, and some pretty good fishing.
Today we had a make-up party, and all the guys had a ball together. We started out looking for dolphin and wound up catching our limit of bailers. It took several stops but we got 'em. After that we enjoyed the day while we waited for a bigger bite. We only had one wahoo bite today and pulled the hook on him, but we did have a hot teaser bite from a sailfish that switched off to a TLD for a great fight. Congrats to Duane on the catch and release. ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul
24 Fishing was on the scrappy side for most of the day, and the weather wasn't too special either.
I figured it would be choppy today with a 15-20 southwest forecast, but a couple hours into the day it was blowing a steady 25, and plenty choppy. Well, most guys don't mind it choppy as long as the fish are biting, but the bites were few and far between for us today. We caught a nice gaffer dolphin shortly after we started fishing, and with the exception of a barracuda release, it was 1:30 till we had our next bite. Fortunately in the last hour of fishing we had four wahoo bites and landed three of them. Kinda like pulling a rabbit out of a hat. Anyway, thanks Rodney for hanging in there while we tried to search out some fish for your group. Talk to you soon. ![]() Jul
23 Today was as beautiful as we had hoped. Fishing wasn't red hot, but we had an occasional quality bite that kept everybody pumped up and excited about the next one.
The odds were in our favor today with the wahoo bites. We had five bites and caught four of them. Congrats to Brian with his citation 46 pounder, and to Tom who's 38 pounder was just shy of the 40 pound citation mark, but still a nice fish. We had two sailfish encounters, but both fish were unsuccessfully "switched off". One dolphin and one bonito would round out our catch. There was a good sign of sailfish today around the fleet, and maybe some dolphin offshore, but it didn't sound like they wanted to bite very well. Thanks again Brian for spending the day with us! ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul
22 We had a little bumpy ride out this morning, but the weather improved as the day went on, and we did have a few bites today.
We caught two out of four wahoo bites this morning, and worked on to the southwest in hopes of more. We never had another wahoo bite, but we did catch a couple of small gaffer dolphin, and found one school of bailers which we managed to land a handful more out of. There were a few blue marlin bites today, for a change, and the weather looks like it should be decent for tomorrow, so we'll see! Thanks guys! ![]() ![]() Jul
21 The fishing cooled off quite a bit from the last time I fished, but it'll get better.
The good news is that we finally made it back out, after sitting to the dock for the last few days. The bad news is that the fishing was terrible. No, I'm not gonna sugar coat it. The ugly part was, well, the ocean was ugly. It blew southwest 25 all day and it wasn't for the faint of heart. My guys tuffed it out though, and moral was good all day, even though we only caught two dolphin. We did have two wahoo bites, but they both got away. We saw some cool stuff though, and my guys had a great appreciation for the "nature" side of the adventure. We saw a pair of sunfish, and right at the end of the day we had a long tailed tropic bird follow the boat for ten minutes or so. For pelagic bird watchers, that's like a grand slam! Anyway, I appreciate everything Casey, and hope to see you next year. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul
16 Today was a little rougher than I would have liked, but my crew did well, and the fishing was pretty good too.
My friend Bill wanted to have an offshore adventure with his daughter and son-in-law, so today was the day. We found several schools of dolphin and were able to catch our limit of them. We had four wahoo bites, but they got the best of us today. We also had three sailfish encounters and managed to successfully land and release one of them. Bill's daughter Kaytee was the angler on the sailfish, so we were all proud of her! Thanks for another great day on the water! ![]() ![]() Jul
15 Today was a special day for Joe and Susan. They got married on the Godspeed, then we headed offshore for a day of fishing!
We had a nice ceremony at sunrise, in the channel down near the inlet. Their pastor was along to preside over the wedding, and I must say he did an excellent job. After rings and kisses were exchanged, we headed on off for a day of Hatteras offshore fishing. We caught pretty close to our limit of dolphin, most of them in the morning, some in the afternoon. Joe's son Wade caught a nice 30 pound dolphin, just to out do everyone else. We raised three sails today, one of them ate a shortrigger bait, and we simply missed him. We also had quite a few wahoo bites, which complicated our sailfishing technique. We did manage to land one of them, a 20 pounder. It's good to see the quality bites around' Thanks guys for sharing your special day with us! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jul
12 It was another perfect day for Hatteras offshore fishing!
As soon as we set our lines out this morning, we had a school of dolphin up. We caught 15 or so, and then it was a long dry spell. I think the majority of our fleet went south to try some marlin fishing, and from the reports I heard, it was good fishing. We did raise a sailfish, but that was our only encounter, and we covered a lot of ground. Late in the afternoon, I found a current rip that was holding some dolphin, and we managed to catch 40 more to make our day. All's well that ends well! ![]() ![]() Jul
10 In spite of a threatening forecast, the weather and fishing turned out to both be pretty good.
The further we ran offshore, the windier and rougher it got, and I figured it to be a "survival" day. Well, the wind fell out, and the forecasted numerous thunderstorms never got here. It turned out to be a nice day after all. We started fishing on a color change and didn't go far before finding a school of dolphin. We managed to catch our limit in an hour or so, with six or seven small to medium gaffers mixed in the pile. We spent the rest of the day hoping for a sailfish or a wahoo. We did miss a sail in the morning, and in the afternoon had another one appear behind a teaser, and then look over most of the baits in our spread, but never ate. Lately there have been a few more wahoo bites, so I'm looking forward to getting one soon! Thanks to my good ol' Varina rednecks for a great day! See you in the fall. ![]() ![]() Fishing Blog Archive
