31 Hard to believe that tomorrow will be spent preparing for a hurricane, as beautiful as it was today. The wahoo fishing was crazy too.
We started our day with a school of dolphin, which we managed to catch twelve of, then it was off for something bigger. I hoped for a few wahoo bites, but didn't expect it to be as good as it was. In three hours we had landed ten out of fifteen bites! My group said they had enough, so at noon we were outa there! I wish the weather was going to stay nice for the next few days so we could take advantage of this great fishing. Anyway, thanks Dave, for a great day offshore. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
28 Today wound up being nicer than we had expected, looking at the weather earlier in the week, but the dolphin fishing was simply at it's peak.
The winds were northeast around 15, quite pleasant if you ask me. There was a swell in the inlet this morning from distant hurricane Daniele, but we waited for a set and breezed on across the bar. When we hit the blue water, the dolphin were there waiting on us. We found the mega school of big bailers, with several small gaffers mixed in. Rick, Katrina, Gabe and Madison hammered them hard. I told them that they were natural born killers. They smiled like killers do. Anyway, after the morning flurry, we worked offshore a little further in hopes of a wahoo bite, but as we got in to more current, the seas began to build. I decided it would be better to shallow up instead. Around 1:00 we got a report that the inlet was getting a little nastier, so we decided to wrap it up and head on in. Madison finished off the day by releasing a barracuda. Thanks Rick for sharing the day with us. Can't wait to see you back again! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
26 Today was the slickest day in a while, like glass. Dolphin fishing was excellent again today as well.
I have been trying to get my buddy Sean offshore for several years now, and today it finally happened. He brought Heath along who had never been offshore either. As soon as I slowed the boat down we found a big school of dolphin and caught our limit...one stop shopping. We never had a wahoo bite today, and there were just a few caught around the fleet today. I dropped on offshore to look for a marlin bite, but there wasn't much going on out there either. One good thing was that the current was almost slack, so I took the opportunity to drop to the bottom. We caught our limit of snowy groupers in two drops, and went back to trolling. Sean caught a citation, 23 pounder and a ten pounder on one rig! Anyway, we had a great time, and look forward to doing it again! Thanks guys. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
25 Today we tried something a little different. My friend Al wanted to catch a shark, so that's what we spent the first half of the day doing.
We caught three sand tigers between 175 and 250 pounds, and cured Al of his urge to pull on something that pulls back. We jogged on off a little further and found a big school of dolphin around a tree limb. We hammered them pretty hard, and even caught four wahoos around it before packing it in. I've got to say that the action was "non stop" today! Thanks Al, and I want to say that you did great for your first day on the job! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
24 We pulled out of the harbor in a monsoon, but once again, fishing was good. Today was day # 2 for these guys.
Light northeast and a slight chance of an afternoon shower. Yeah, right. It was southeast 20 and the hardest rain you've ever seen. We managed to bounce our way offshore to the fishing grounds where the dolphin were abundant, big bailers and small gaffers. We had no trouble limiting out with them. We only had three wahoo bites today, and landed one, but were glad to have him. We were successful in catching a doubleheader sailfish, which was today's highlight. Ed got another one, and congrats to Todd and his first billfish release. Thanks Ed for two great days! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
23 The seas were reasonably calm, but it rained for the first several hours of the day. Everybody was wet, but that didn't stop the fish from biting!
First of all, Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary to Dave and his wife. She gave him a fishing trip for his anniversary gift, and a chance to fulfill his dream of catching a billfish. It worked out, and then some. We weren't far into the day before we caught our first wahoo. Next I found one out of two floats that held enough dolphin for us to get our limit. The first one had several nice gaffers around it, and we capitalized on the opportunity. I have lost track of the order that things transpired, but we wound up with four wahoos. Dave caught his sailfish which was one out of a double, and Ed caught one towards the end of the day. It was an action packed day to say the least! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
21 The weather was great again today, and once again, so was the fishing.
The wahoos are definitely getting even from the great batting average we were having earlier in the week. Today we were fortunate to catch three wahoos, but probably missed or pulled off another ten or twelve. We also had at least one sailfish encounter in amongst our wahoo action. We found three schools of dolphin during the course of the day, and it was enough for us to limit out. My buddy Mark moved WAAAY up north, so I don't get to see him as much as I used to, but it was great to spend today with him and his friends. Thanks, and I hope it won't be a whole year till I see you again! ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
20 We fished in a cool, breezy northeaster today, and the fishing was great!
My friend, "Brother", brought the kids out, and we needed a good school of dolphin to do what we needed to do. Well, I found a tree floating out there, and it was loaded with dolphin. We got pretty close to a limit before we went on and looked for some wahoo action. 12 year old Austin caught the first one, and 9 year old Liza caught the second one. We had two other wahoo bites before knocking off early and heading in. There were a number of billfish sightings out a little deeper. Thanks for another great adventure Brother! ![]() ![]() ![]() Aug
19 Fishing was good again today, and the weather was great, in spite of what the weather man threatened us with.
The windy, squally day that was predicted wound up being calm and partly cloudy. Most everybody got what dolphin they wanted, including us, and the wahoo fishing continued to be great. Today we paid for the good luck that we have had the last few days, and only caught one wahoo out of five bites, but that's wahoo fishing. Looks like tomorrow's gonna be a good one too! ![]() ![]() Aug
18 We were once again blessed with beautiful weather and great fishing!
Other than a couple of passing rain squalls this morning, it was a gorgeous, flat calm, sunny day. Fishing was comparable to yesterday, plenty of wahoo bites, and maybe better dolphin fishing. Today we landed seven wahoos out of a dozen or so bites, and scrapped out a good handful of dolphin, bailers and gaffers. Thanks for another great day on the water guys! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Fishing Blog Archive
